Blame – Volume 3

justice isn't fair - blame

(Lady justice).

According to Webster: “eq·ui·ty,” (in context) The ideal of being just, impartial, and fair.

According to Webster: “i·de·al,” Absolute perfection.

According to Webster: “re·spon·si·bil·i·ty,”  Something for which one is responsible; a duty, an obligation, or a burden.

Question: What is an American citizen’s responsibility in the 21st-century?

I ask that question because after “pondering” the question, I honestly can’t come up with an acceptable answer.

When I was a young man, and/or, when I turned 18 years of age, federal law required that I register for the draft.

According to Webster: “draft,” (in context) n. Compulsory enrollment in the armed forces; conscription.

(One can only imagine).

When I was a young man, the military turned boys into men and developed character.

The draft, (at least in my opinion), although I wasn’t pleased to receive my letter of; “Greetings!” The draft system was as equitable as any method of recruiting men for military service and much more equitable than the recruiting of folks for jobs in civilian industries.

Getting a job in the Army or the Marine Corps required no skill, no family tradition, or no political influence. In 1964 all you needed to secure a job in the Army was to stay off of a bus headed for Canada.

Even though our current president, and commander-in-chief never served in the military, one might still think, ..since men who served in Vietnam are currently serving in high positions in our government.

Men like Sen. John McCain and our new Secretary of State John Kerry, ..that “our” (military) ..especially “our” (veterans) would be treated with a higher level of concern and respect.

(Sidebar).

Ooops, ..after a brief moment for clarification, John McCain didn’t really serve in Vietnam, John McCain served “over” Vietnam.

He didn’t sleep in a bed that he built with a shovel, he slept in a bed with clean sheets on an aircraft carrier that (lulled) him to sleep at night as it gently rolled on the ocean blue…

John McCain's aircraft carrier 1a

..at least until he got his butt shot out of the air and spent the rest of the war at the Hanoi Hilton.

Not a particularly cozy place to reside from the accounts I’ve read, but then what the hell, ..how did; “ol William Tecumseh Sherman” put it?   Oh yeah; …

war is hell - page break 1

Continuing…

I received a note from my friend Tom just yesterday, Tom’s one of the good guys, he pays his rent by advocating for our veterans. Tom’s missive, although predominantly criticizing me on my penchant for conservatism allowed enough time to fill me in on the fact that, (S-1982), the “Comprehensive Veterans Health and Benefits and Military Retirement Pay Restoration Act of 2014 went down in flames when 44 of my, (as Tom calls them) repugnant Republicans voted “against” the bill.

Question: Why is it that our representatives in Washington D.C. don’t seem to have a problem allocating money for off-site, (out of their well appointed (tax payer) provided offices in D.C.), to attend a conference or convention in an entirely (un-fun) environment such as Las Vegas, Hawaii, or Miami Beach, and they can’t find the “wampum” to fulfill America’s obligation to the men and women who put themselves “on the line,” and in (harms way) to protect this nation?

Of course the way Obama’s going with his quest to (shrink) “our” military into oblivion, so he can utilize the funds to feed (unwed) mothers and their “illegitimate” children from sea to shining sea, it’s not a stretch to imagine the next generation of Americans speaking Russian or Chinese.

Which of course is going to be especially hard for our friends from down south as they have yet learned to speak English.

Can you imagine poor little Juan Avtukhov trying to make sense of Mandarin?

Although I have asked this question on numerous occasions in the past, it’s a great question, (at least in my opinion).

why do we 1

It simply doesn’t make any sense to me, the people, and/or, individuals who fight wars, ..never “profit” from the wars they fight.

As example; Vietnam, and/or, (my war), as opposed to (my father’s war), ..”The Big One, and/or, “The Great War.”

As it was a (world war), ..and in (world wars), ..troops are not encumbered by silly rules like we had in Vietnam.

Truth; standing orders, ..no one was to have a (loaded) gun, and/or, weapon (inside the Battalion parameter) unless you were specifically authorized or if the compound came under attack.

Question: Was war in South Vietnam, as William Tecumseh Sherman alluded; (hell)?

To which of course I can knowledgeably respond, “Not more than in 24 hours in any given day.”

So now, how many of you are starting to understand that I’m not an advocate or a champion of people shooting and killing each other?

Although I have no “verifiable” number of the individuals who ran away to Canada to avoid serving in Vietnam, I do have a verifiable number of Americans who didn’t shirk their duty as citizen.

Vietnam Memorial - graphic

..although it is estimated that the total number of deaths attributed to the Vietnam War over 13 years was 3.8 million.

Question: Did the 58,286 Americans whose names appear on the Vietnam Memorial wall in Washington need to die?

absolutely not - page break 1

Question: Could the 58,286 men whose names appear on the Vietnam Memorial wall have avoided going to Vietnam?

not without breaking the law 1

Truth forges understanding, I’ll be back tomorrow
