Thanksgiving 2013..

What better “title” for a post to be offered on November 28, and/or, a day traditionally celebrated as…

Thanksgiving - Pilgrims 2Afirst Thanksgiving - page break 3A

In the United States, the modern Thanksgiving holiday tradition is commonly, but not universally, traced to a poorly documented 1621 celebration at Plymouth in present-day Massachusetts.

Thanksgiving 1621 graphic

The 1621 Plymouth feast and thanksgiving was prompted by a good harvest. Pilgrims and Puritans who began emigrating from England in the 1620s and 1630s carried the tradition of Days of Fasting and Days of Thanksgiving with them to New England.

Several days of Thanksgiving were celebrated in early New England history that have been identified as the…

first Thanksgiving - page break 2A

..including Pilgrim holidays in Plymouth in 1621 and 1623, and a Puritan holiday in Boston in 1631.

According to historian Jeremy Bangs, director of the Leiden American Pilgrim Museum, the Pilgrims may have been influenced by watching the annual services of Thanksgiving for the relief of the siege of Leiden in 1574, while they were staying in Leiden.

In later years, religious thanksgiving services were declared by civil leaders such as Governor Bradford, who planned a thanksgiving celebration and fast in 1623.

The practice of holding an annual harvest festival did not become a regular affair in New England until the late 1660s.

Thanksgiving proclamations were made mostly by church leaders in New England up until 1682, and then by both state and church leaders until after the American Revolution.

During the revolutionary period, political influences affected the issuance of Thanksgiving proclamations.

Various proclamations were made by royal governors, John Hancock, General George Washington, and the Continental Congress, each giving thanks to God for events favorable to their causes.

Thanksgiving proclamation - 178

As President of the United States, George Washington proclaimed the first nation-wide thanksgiving celebration in America marking November 26, 1789, “as a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favours of Almighty God”.

In modern times the current President of the United States, in addition to issuing a proclamation, will “pardon” a turkey, which spares the bird’s life and ensures that it will spend the duration of its life roaming freely on farmland. (Source, Wikipedia).

Question: What countries “other than” the United States celebrate Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving holiday is celebrated in many countries around the world. Some countries that commemorate it include the United Kingdom, China, Malaysia, Korea, Canada, Australia, India and some African countries. (Source, ask.com).

misspelled country documented 1

I don’t know where this picture comes from, but people putting things on the web should know how to spell, especially if they’re quoting a great man like Kennedy.

This comes close to being disrespect.

in reply - readers forum 2

Hello Bruce, you are absolutely right, people putting things on the Internet should know how to spell. – Accordingly, I beg your forgiveness as I am sure that you are that one person on the planet earth who has never misspelled a word.

As for respect and disrespect, I have out of respect for your pursuit of correctness, ..and respect for myself, – “tasked” myself Wednesday afternoon to correct my error, – its done.

Moving forward, – being that (you and I) are so intrinsically “symbiotic” in our quest for “Truth, Justice and the American” way, – I share with you a few facts about John F. Kennedy that you may not be aware of?

Popular history has provides that John F. Kennedy had an admirable and distinctive career and United States Navy. (Which is true).

Less advertised history provides that John F. Kennedy was disqualified for induction into the U.S. Army in 1941 due to chronic lower back problems.

Question: Was Kennedy’s disqualification for induction into the U.S. Army actually the result of chronic lower back problems, or was Kennedy disqualified because he was the son of a wealthy (uber-powerful) father?

“In September 1941, after medical disqualification by the Army for his chronic lower back problems, Kennedy joined the U.S. Navy, with the influence of the director of the Office of Naval Intelligence, former naval attaché to Joseph Kennedy.

Kennedy was an ensign serving in the office of the Secretary of the Navy when the attack on Pearl Harbor occurred. He attended the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps and then voluntarily entered the Motor Torpedo Boat Squadron Training Center in Melville, Rhode Island.

PT-109_crew

Thereafter, Kennedy was assigned duty in Panama and later in the Pacific theater, where Kennedy earned the rank of lieutenant, commanding a patrol torpedo (PT) boat.” (Source Wikipedia).

According to Webster: “re·spect,” (in context) To honor and regard; esteem.

Years after Kennedy’s death, it was revealed that in September 1947, while Kennedy was 30 and in his first term in Congress, he was diagnosed by Sir Daniel Davis at The London Clinic with Addison’s disease, a rare endocrine disorder.

(Sidebar).

According to Webster: “en·do·crine,” Relating to endocrine glands or the hormones secreted by them.

Continuing…

In 1966, his White House doctor, Janet Travell, revealed that Kennedy also had hypothyroidism. The presence of two endocrine diseases raises the possibility that Kennedy had autoimmune polyendocrine syndrome type 2 (APS 2).

Kennedy also suffered from chronic and severe back pain, for which he had surgery and was written up in the American Medical Association’s Archives of Surgery.

Kennedy’s condition (if known) would have had diplomatic repercussions, as he appears to have been taking a combination of drugs to treat severe back pain during the 1961 Vienna Summit with Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev.

The combination included hormones, animal organ cells, steroids, vitamins, enzymes, and amphetamines, and possible potential side effects included hyperactivity, hypertension, impaired judgment, nervousness, and mood swings.

Kennedy at one time was regularly seen by no fewer than three doctors, one of whom, Max Jacobson, was (unknown) to the other two, as his mode of treatment was controversial and used for the most severe bouts of back pain.

There were disagreements among his doctors, into late 1961, over the proper balance of medication and exercise, with the president preferring the former as he was short on time and desired immediate relief.

During that timeframe the president’s physician, George Burkley, did set up some gym equipment in the White House basement where Kennedy did stretching exercises for his back three times a week. Details of these and other medical problems were not publicly disclosed during Kennedy’s lifetime.” (Source Wikipedia).

(Sidebar).

In government, at least in (my considered opinion) a secret concerning the health and ability of an individual responsible for the security of the nation is inexcusable.

Continuing…

“In 1946, U.S. Representative James Michael Curley vacated his seat in the strongly Democratic 11th Congressional district in Massachusetts, at Joe’s urging, to become mayor of Boston.

Kennedy ran for the seat, beating his Republican opponent by a large margin. He served as a congressman for six years.

In the 1952 election, he defeated incumbent Republican Henry Cabot Lodge, jr. for the U.S. Senate seat. The following year he was married to Jacqueline.

Kennedy underwent several spinal operations over the following two years. Often absent from the Senate, he was at times critically ill and received Catholic last rites. During his convalescence in 1956, he published Profiles in Courage, a book about U.S. Senators who risked their careers for their personal beliefs, and which received the Pulitzer Prize for Biography in 1957.

Rumors that this work was co-authored by Kennedys close adviser and speechwriter, Ted Sorensen, were established in Sorensen’s 2008 autobiography.

In the book, Kennedy supported the conservative Southern view that Reconstruction was corrupt.” (Source Wikipedia).

Extramarital relationships…

During his presidency Kennedy reportedly had affairs with a number of women, including Marilyn Monroe, Gunilla von Post, Judith Campbell, Mary Pinchot Meyer, Marlene Dietrich, Mimi Alford, and Jackie’s press secretary Pamela Turnure.

Kennedy’s philandering may have included actress Angie Dickinson and White House secretaries Priscilla Weir and Jill Cowen.

The extent of his relationship with Marilyn Monroe will never be known, although it has been reported they spent a weekend together in March 1962 while Kennedy was staying at Bing Crosby’s house.

Furthermore, the White House switchboard noted calls from her during 1962.

J. Edgar Hoover, the FBI director, was also privileged to reports of Kennedy’s indiscretions. Doctors speculated that the drugs the president required for Addison’s disease had the side effect of increasing his virility.

The president once remarked to UK Prime Minister Harold Macmillan, “I wonder how it is for you, Harold? If I don’t have a woman for three days, I get terrible headaches.”

Kennedy may have been influenced by his father Joe Kennedy’s open affair with Gloria Swanson. According to John F. Kennedy himself, Joe told his sons to get “laid as often as possible”. (Source Wikipedia).

Question: What behaviors, (if any) other than a misspelled word, – do you (personally) find unacceptable and unworthy of respect Bruce?

Had the voters in 1960 been apprised of Kennedy’s health issues, he would not have been elected as the President of the United States and everything that I have gleaned and written above would be moot, – pretty much the same would have been true if the voters in 2008 would have known then what they know now about “Barack Hussein Obama,” – he wouldn’t currently be the President of the United States.

When you challenge one of my “editing oversights” Bruce, you have both my attention and my affiliation in correcting the neglect.

However when you challenge my “integrity,” you would be wise to understand (what behaviors) in a decent society are acceptable and which are not.

Truth forges understanding, I’ll be back tomorrow
