Michelle Obama laughed and raised her hand as she participated in a discussion with students from all over South Africa at the Sci-Bono Discovery Center in Johannesburg on June 29, 2013. The virtual event, which was also joined by teenagers from all across U.S., highlighted the importance of education.

The Obamas touched down in Senegal on June 26 with daughters Malia and Sasha in tow, as well as Michelle Obama’s mother, Marian Robinson, and the First Lady’s niece, Leslie Robinson. Leslie is the teenage daughter of Michelle’s older brother Craig.

Malia Obama joined her mom and cousin for a visit with students at the Martin Luther King Middle School, an all-girls school in Dakar, on June 27, 2013. The Obama ladies met Principal Rouguy Ly Sall on their visit to the school.
