The Day after, ..and/or, ..Superbowl Sunday!

groundhog 1

German tradition holds that if the sun comes out on “Candlemas”, the precursor to Groundhog Day, the hedgehog (or badger) will see its shadow and six more weeks of winter will follow.

When German settlers came to Pennsylvania they continued this tradition, using groundhogs instead of hedgehogs to predict the weather. (Source, about.com).

Question: So what is Candlemas?

 Candlemas 1

Candlemas is a Christian holiday celebrated annually on February 2. It celebrates three occasions according to Christian belief: the presentation of the child Jesus; Jesus’ first entry into the temple; and it celebrates the Virgin Mary’s purification (mainly in Catholic churches). After receiving another bunk, ..and/or, ..junk email from the bowels of cyberspace a couple of weeks ago, providing that Barack Obama’s State of the Union address and Groundhog’s Day would both fall on the same day, ..February 2. I had intended to compose yesterday’s offering around the (humor) of that bunk, ..junk, ..email. However, as more often than not, ..bunk, ..and/or, ..junk, ..emails (are just that), ..with yesterday’s offering now in the archives, ..it should be clear to my followers that I didn’t do that.

Nevertheless, as not to waste what, (at least in my opinion,) was (humorous,) I offer it below; …

“In 2013, both Groundhog’s Day and the State of the Union address will occur on the same day.

This is an ironic scheduling of events. As one involves a traditional ritual in which the Nation observes a creature of limited intelligence predict the future.

The other involves a groundhog…”
