Happiness..

According to Webster’s: happiness, happy, happier, happiest. 1. Characterized by good luck; fortunate. 2. Enjoying, showing, or marked by pleasure, satisfaction, or joy. 3. Being especially well-adapted; felicitous: 4. Cheerful; willing: 5.a. Characterized by a spontaneous or obsessive inclination to use something. Often used in combination: b. Enthusiastic about or involved with to a disproportionate degree.

Okay, for the answer to the question I posed yesterday, ..what makes me happy? Fresh mowed grass makes me happy. Blue sky over a shaded pond makes me happy. Sunrises make me happy. My dog Molly makes me happy. Living in a small rural community where it doesn’t matter if I lock my door when I go to the store, makes me happy.

Happiness comes in all sizes, shapes, and colors, as do Americans. Lady Liberty has stood proud upon her pedestal on Liberty Island since her dedication in October of 1886 by then President Grover Cleveland to greet the world’s tired, the world’s poor, and the worlds huddled masses yearning to breathe free. (Paraphrased and borrowed from Emma Lazarus’s famous Poem, “The New Colossus.”)

The New Colossus

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,

With conquering limbs astride from land to land;

Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand

A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame

Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name

Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand

Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command

The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.

“Keep ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she

With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor,

Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,

The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.

Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,

I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

America the world over is known for being the Land of Opportunity…

According to Webster’s: op·por·tu·ni·ty 1. A favorable or advantageous circumstance or combination of circumstances. 2. A favorable or suitable occasion or time. 3. A chance for progress or advancement.

…and now that I have provided you with Webster’s definition of opportunity and you can see that nowhere within Webster’s definition does it refer to a free lunch, we can continue.

Within the structure of American law there our provisions for obtaining American citizenship. Provisions and procedures that have been utilized by countless individuals from every continent on the planet since America became America, offering the same opportunities to those applying for citizenship as American citizens who were born in America.

Individuals applying for American citizenship through legal channels make me happy. A government that enforces its immigration laws would make me happy. A government that respects the people who pay their salaries would make me happy. A government that appreciates the people who pay their salaries would make me happy. A government that understands that it works for the people would make me happy.
